“The history and family aspect of nVent really attracted me, and it must have worked because 23 years later…I am still here! We have many veterans working here and we all seemed to gravitate to one another eventually.”

Bryon is a quality technician who works in nVent’s Electrical & Fastening Solutions (EFS) business segment in Solon, Ohio. He says he joined nVent nearly 23 years ago because it presented an opportunity to transfer the skills he’d honed in the military to a new, civilian role. The company’s culture was also compelling to him. He saw a sense of history, a focus on family, and an emphasis on teamwork . At nVent, he found an environment that encourages employees to bring  bold ideas, be authentic, and build the future of a more sustainable and electrified world.

Bryon says his transition from the Marine Corps to a manufacturing career at nVent was smooth, thanks in part to the cross-training he’d received in the military. Skills like maintaining machinery, attention to detail, punctuality, and tactfulness were as relevant in the factory as in the field. The ability to adapt, overcome obstacles, and prioritize were also key traits he carried over from his military service.

Bryon currently co-leads our Veterans Employee Resource Group (ERG), whose mission is to build awareness of the unique perspectives and skills veterans bring to the workplace. Let’s take a closer look at how Bryon continues to excel in his career as he encourages others to do the same.

What is your former branch of service and military specialty (MOS)?

US Marine Corps, 1161 refrigeration mechanic.

Why did you choose to join nVent?

nVent (ERICO at that time) was presented to me as an opportunity. The position it offered lined up very closely to what I was doing in the military. The history and family aspects of the company really attracted me, and it must have worked because 23 years later, I am still here!

How did you discuss your military experience and the transferable/technical skills you possess when you interviewed at nVent?

While in the Marine Corps we were cross-trained in many other areas besides our own specialty. Many of those skills were maintaining and repairing machinery. Although the equipment was different, the skills were the same. Attention to detail, being punctual, and tact were key military traits that I believe transition to the civilian workforce very well

How do you incorporate your military service into your personal and professional brand currently?

Attention to detail, following standard operating procedures , being able to adapt and overcome obstacles that present themselves daily is key in both military and manufacturing.

Which nVent Win Right value resonates with you most and why?

Customer First! Without customers, nVent doesn’t exist. We have all had bad customer service at some point and that experience can resonate for a long time. We have to make our customers our number one priority.

What is unique about nVent’s culture?

Although nVent has only been around 5 years, the history that it is based on has been well-established and focuses on families. Many of the experiences that I have had with nVent have felt like a family gathering.

What support does nVent or the Veteran’s ERG offer that has aided your transition to civilian work?

The small groups/teams that you get to work in feel much like those in the military. It felt very natural for me while I was transitioning to civilian work and life. It’s not just about you, but takes a team to be successful!

How does nVent’s culture appeal to specifically veterans?

The family aspect of the culture. The people you work with end up as part of your extended family much in the same way your military family was while serving. We have many veterans working here and we all seemed to gravitate to one another eventually.

What is one piece of career advice you would like to share with others?

Don’t be afraid to take a path you never saw coming. There are opportunities that will come around that you never thought you might follow, but could end up being your career path or a path to another opportunity. Keep your military bearing as it will guide you and provide you with a solid path forward!
